How To Detangle While Transitioning
The transitioning period of hair is never easy. Your hair and scalp are going through an adjustment period that often leaves them fragile. As a result, dryness and breakage leave chunks of thinned hair all over the place. The worst of all is the never-ending tangles! Detangling becomes a necessity that will help preserve your precious curls from further harm. With these tips, your hair will be less detangled as you go through the transitional period. Your kinks and curls will be protected and left to prosper!
1) Be consistent with Water usage!
I’ve said it before, and I will continue to say it again: Water is of the utmost importance! Detangling your hair with damp and/or wet hair will make the process that much easier. Often, we underestimate the power of water, yet it allows products to fully absorb into your precious strands. Thus, knots and snags are easier to manage because your hair is fully hydrated! To properly distribute water, the Curlmix Fine Mister Spray Bottle allows you autonomy over how much water you’re getting! With the use of water, the hair becomes more flexible so combing and brushing become less of a chore too! The Rizos Curls Pink Hanging Shower Comb and Rizos Curls Pink Detangling Flexi Brush are great tools to detangle with. CAUTION: Please be careful when detangling with your tools! Your strands are already fragile from the transition. Water increases its sensitivity and proneness to breakage, but if done gently, the damage is avoided!
2) Divide and Conquer.
Sectioning your hair will allow you more time to pay special attention to your curls! Your hair will get the attention it deserves because it’s easier to manage! When you don’t section your hair properly, certain sections get more attention than others, so it leaves uneven hydration and moisture. When dealing with transitioning hair, that’s the worst-case scenario. Gentleness and attention will take you far with detangling!
3) Deep Conditioners are a necessity.
Deep conditioners are called deep conditioners for a reason. Ultra-rich nourishment will be granted to your fragile locks increasing the likelihood for fortified strands. Deep conditioning once a week will help your curls stay pillowy soft! Obia Naturals Babassu Deep Conditioner and Moisture Love Deep Indulgence Replenishing Conditioner are great deep conditioners to replenish your curls back to their OG texture! They create a great slip to make the detangling feel like butter!
Mild heat seals the deal. Mild heat opens the hair cuticle from the inside out, so the deep conditioner applied penetrates further nourishment. Disposable shower caps such as the Thermal Hair Care Disposable Shower Caps should be used in conjunction with some type of heated application. A hooded dryer or Thermal Hair Care Hot Head would be great options to increase your deep conditioning experience. Don’t forget! Add a little bit of additional product to your ends since they’re the oldest part of your hair.
4) Don’t be afraid to trim!
The worst part of transitioning is coming to terms that some parts of your hair aren’t “save-able”. They’re too damaged to retain adequate moisture, thus it begins to break off and/or create disastrous split ends. As a result, you’ll have fewer tangles because your hair is healthier! Trimming your hair is nothing to be afraid of! Health>Length is a mantra to live by. Trust, it’ll say some trouble in the future!
The transitioning period is never easy. It requires patience and diligence to make a difference in your hair texture. Your hair’s fragile so please be gentle with your manipulation! The detangling process is important to your hair’s health. Your hair is like a plant and it needs the right ingredients to keep it healthy. Your curls need to prosper so you must give them the space to do so!
